For 1,900 Ghanaians trapped in the nightmare of xenophobic attacks, home was a prayer away, until the government answered.
Between May and September, Ghana spent GH¢49.72 million on a rescue mission that moved like clockwork: chartered planes, safe houses, hot meals, and medics on standby.
For many, the sight of a Ghanaian flag on an evacuation bus was the first moment they felt safe in weeks.
GH¢38.84 million covered the physical journey, flights, roads, beds, and bandages. GH¢10.80 million cushioned the landing, cash, transport, and counseling for shattered souls, and GH¢84,274 honored two lives lost, bringing their remains back to Ghanaian soil.
Now back home, returnees are getting more than sympathy. They’re getting health insurance, job placement help, and trauma care.
“We value every Ghanaian life, everywhere,” said Minister Ablakwa. And for 1,900 people, that wasn’t just a slogan, it was a lifeline.
