An Accra Circuit Court has handed down a one-year prison sentence to Ghanaian TikToker Camilla Alhassan after she pleaded guilty to publishing false news and engaging in offensive conduct.
The ruling follows investigations into videos Alhassan posted on social media, in which she alleged, without any substantiation, that President John Dramani Mahama had sacrificed 32 cows to secure victory in the 2024 general elections.
Authorities later determined the claims to be entirely unfounded.
Alhassan, who appeared before the court, admitted to the charges and was convicted accordingly.
The court sentenced her to 12 months’ imprisonment for the offences, which fall under Ghana’s laws on false publication and offensive behaviour.
The case has reignited public debate on the regulation of social media content and the consequences of spreading unverified information, particularly when it targets high-profile public figures.
