Two suspected armed robbers were shot dead by police on Monday morning following a robbery and shooting of a mobile money vendor at Community 5 in Tema, the police have said.
The suspects opened fire on pursuing officers after fleeing the scene of the attack at Aba Fosuah Plaza, according to a statement from the Tema Regional Police Command. Officers returned fire, fatally wounding both men.
The incident happened around 8:30 a.m. on April 13, 2026.
Police said one of the suspects, a pillion passenger on a black Royal motorbike (registration M-24-GE 778), approached the vendor under the guise of making a cash-out transaction.
When she reached into her bag for her phone, he allegedly pulled a pistol and demanded the bag containing cash.
The vendor resisted, leading to a struggle. The suspect then shot her in the leg before grabbing the bag and fleeing with the rider, police said.
A police patrol team from the Tema Regional Operations Unit, stationed nearby for routine duties, responded to a distress call and gave chase. Near a junction close to Smart Hotel in Community 6, the suspects allegedly opened fire on the officers.
Police returned fire, hitting both suspects. They fell off the motorbike and were rushed to the Police Hospital, where they were pronounced dead on arrival.
A search of the suspects uncovered:
- A 9mm pistol loaded with ammunition
- Three mobile phones and assorted SIM cards
- A talisman
- A Ghana Card (later identified as belonging to the victim)
- A motorbike key
- GH¢11,390 in cash
A spent cartridge was also recovered at the robbery scene.
The injured mobile money vendor is receiving treatment and is in stable condition, police said.
The Tema Regional Police Command said it remains committed to public safety and urged residents to stay vigilant and report suspicious activity to the nearest police station.
