by Creative Network

A multi-agency security task force has intercepted 118 bags of cocoa beans, weighing 11,800 kilograms, concealed beneath a truckload of plantains along the Bunkpurugu border road.

Two suspects are in custody.

The operation, conducted at approximately 17:30 GMT on August 9, 2026, was spearheaded by the Bunkpurugu Immigration Command under ACI Edwin Adejetey Doku.

It followed intelligence provided by North East Regional National Security Coordinator Ernest Bawanin Guat.

The joint team, comprising the Ghana Police Service, Ghana Immigration Service, Defence Intelligence, the National Security/Signal Bureau, and the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority, intercepted a Hyundai truck (registration AS-3272-25) at a Customs checkpoint.

A search revealed the cocoa hidden beneath a top layer of plantains.

The seized produce has been handed over to the Customs Division for safekeeping. Suspects Ernestina Akugre, 23, and Mohammed Mumin, 19, are assisting police with investigations.

Investigations are ongoing.
