Police Arrest Suspect for Illegal Possession of Ak-47 Rifle in Bawku

The Upper East Regional Police Command has taken custody of a 27-year-old man arrested for unlawfully possessing an assault rifle in Sakabo, a suburb of Bawku.

The suspect, identified as Abdul Basit, was arrested on April 13, 2026, by a military patrol team during a security operation in the area.

According to police sources, the patrol team heard gunshots while on routine patrol and swiftly moved to the location, where they observed the suspect fleeing into a room.

Officers pursued and apprehended Basit.

A subsequent search of the room uncovered an AK-47 assault rifle loaded with 31 rounds of live ammunition.

During initial interrogation, the suspect reportedly admitted ownership of the weapon.

He is currently in police custody, assisting with investigations and is expected to be arraigned before the court to face justice.
