The Accra Regional Police Command has arrested a 46-year-old former professional boxer, Michael Ayitey Okai, popularly known as “Ayitey Powers,” in connection with an alleged threat of death made against the Director-General of the National Sports Authority, Mr. Yaw Ampofo.
The arrest, confirmed in a press release issued on Monday, August 24, 2026, follows the circulation of a video on social media in which the suspect is alleged to have issued the threat.
According to police, Mr. Okai is currently in custody assisting with investigations.
The Accra Regional Police Command, in a statement signed by Chief Superintendent Juliana Obeng, Head of Public Affairs for the Accra Region, assured the public that investigations are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the alleged threat.
“The Command further urges the public to refrain from spreading unverified information concerning the matter while investigations are ongoing,” the statement read.
The police gave no further details on the content of the video or the circumstances that may have led to the alleged threat.
Mr. Yaw Ampofo was appointed Director-General of the National Sports Authority in 2025. The Authority oversees the development and regulation of sports in Ghana, including the management of national sports stadia and facilities.
Ayitey Okai, a former professional boxer, was active in the local boxing circuit during the 2000s and has remained a public figure, occasionally appearing in media commentary on sports matters.
