Latifa Salifu, the prime suspect in the theft of a newborn from the Mamprobi Hospital, has been ordered into police custody by an Accra District Court.

The 33-year-old appeared before the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) court on Friday, February 20, 2026, following her arrest.

Salifu is accused of stealing a four-day-old baby boy from the hospital’s postnatal ward.

The incident, which occurred on Tuesday, February 17, triggered a swift police investigation aided by public tips.

According to the police report, the baby’s mother, Precious Ankomah, reported that a woman disguised in a nurse’s peach-coloured uniform approached her, claiming she needed to administer medication, and subsequently disappeared with the infant.

Initial claims by the suspect that she had recently delivered at the same facility were debunked after investigators found no matching records. The case has been adjourned to March 4, 2026, for further hearings.

The incident has sparked renewed calls for enhanced security measures in maternity wards across the capital.
