Buckets & Bravery: Residents Save Neighbourhood from Devastating Warehouse Fire

by Creative Network

In a remarkable display of communal heroism, over 200 residents of Saki High Tension banded together with buckets, pans, and basins on Tuesday to battle a raging warehouse fire, holding the blaze at bay until professional firefighters could arrive.

The thick smoke was first spotted billowing from the Idraft facility, a storage warehouse for finished products, prompting an immediate, spontaneous response from the densely populated community.

Children, youth, and even the elderly joined forces, forming a human chain to ferry water from nearby sources and douse the advancing flames.

Their swift action proved critical. By the time four fire tenders from the Gbetsile, Ashaiman, Tema Harbour, and BOST Fire Stations reached the scene, the residents had already prevented the fire from leaping to adjoining homes. No casualties were recorded, and the extent of damage was significantly minimised.

Alhaji Khalid, Managing Director of Idraft, expressed profound gratitude to the residents, describing their intervention as nothing short of courageous.

“A worker noticed thick smoke coming from the warehouse and raised the alarm immediately. We alerted the GNFS, but the community mobilized themselves before the firefighters even arrived,” he told the Ghana News Agency.

“Their actions were instrumental in preventing a major disaster. We are deeply grateful.”

Alhaji Khalid noted that although all available fire extinguishers at the facility were deployed, they proved ineffective against the intensity of the blaze and the combustible materials stored inside.

While portions of the warehouse and its contents were extensively damaged, residents have praised the seamless collaboration between the community and emergency responders, calling it a testament to the power of collective action in times of crisis.

Officials of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) have since commenced investigations to determine the origin of the fire.
