Police have arrested 11 suspects, including several Nigerian nationals, for allegedly using deepfake AI-generated video to impersonate President John Dramani Mahama.
The arrests, carried out by the Cyber Vetting Enforcement Team between May 1 and 3, 2026, followed intelligence on a coordinated scheme to create and circulate fake video content online.
The suspects, aged 17 to 46, were arrested in the Volta Region in operations spanning Sogakope, Dabala, Tongu, Akatsi, and Aflao.

A subsequent operation on May 4 led to five additional arrests in Aflao.
Exhibits seized include laptops, mobile phones, internet routers, 120 pre-registered SIM cards, and a Nigerian-registered Mercedes-Benz ML 350 (Lagos LSR 138HR).
Nine suspects have been remanded to reappear in court on May 25, while two, Thomas Ayoyo, 17, and Louis Segbawu, 18, have been granted bail with two sureties.
