Mahama Denies Third-Term Ambition, Targets Election-Year Fiscal Overspending

by Creative Network

President John Dramani Mahama has firmly restated his commitment to Ghana’s constitutional two-term limit, declaring that his non-participation in the 2028 election will empower him to enforce strict fiscal discipline. He aims to curb the cycle of excessive government spending during election years, a practice he identified as a key driver of the country’s recurring economic crises.

Speaking at a bilateral meeting with Singaporean President Tharman Shanmugaratnam, President Mahama criticized the tendency of incumbent administrations to bypass fiscal safeguards to gain voter approval. He pledged to maintain a firm stance in the lead-up to the 2028 polls, stating, “I will not be a candidate in the next elections and therefore I can hold the line when it comes to fiscal discipline.”

These remarks directly counter allegations from the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), which has claimed that President Mahama intends to seek an unconstitutional third term after his current and final tenure.
