The Ghana Police Service has been thrust into the spotlight after one of its own, General Corporal Robert Katey Koranteng, was arraigned at the Adabraka District Court on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, charged with the murder of a 20-year-old law student.
The victim, identified as Ivan Apprey Baidoo, was a student at Central University. Corporal Koranteng, 34, was stationed at the Traffic Management Enforcement Unit at the Police Headquarters in Accra.
The charge of murder, contrary to Section 46 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29), stems from an incident on August 27, 2026. According to the prosecution, Baidoo was a passenger on a Yango motorbike, traveling from Ashongman Estates to play football at the East Legon Astroturf Park.
The court heard that the motorbike rider, Samuel Wesley Arthur, allegedly ran a red light at the UPSA traffic intersection. Corporal Koranteng, who was on duty at the time, reportedly pursued the motorbike after the rider allegedly failed to stop.
The prosecution alleges that the high-speed chase continued onto the Tema Motorway, where Koranteng kicked the moving motorbike, causing it to lose control and crash into a concrete barrier.
The prosecution further alleges that the officer did not stop to offer assistance and fled the scene. Good Samaritans transported both victims to the Tema General Hospital, where Baidoo was pronounced dead on arrival. The rider, Mr. Arthur, was treated and discharged.
A post-mortem examination conducted on September 3 by Dr. Eric Dumfeh attributed Baidoo’s death to haemorrhagic shock from blunt trauma to the chest and abdomen.
Corporal Koranteng was arrested on September 12 following an investigation by the Homicide Unit of the Criminal Investigations Department. The Police Professional Standards Bureau is also examining the officer’s conduct.
The case remains before the court as investigations continue. Baidoo is scheduled to be buried on Saturday, September 19, 2026.
