The Western Central Regional Police Command has arrested four suspected members of a robbery syndicate believed to be behind a violent gold heist that occurred at Wassa Akropong in March this year,
The intelligence-led operation has been hailed as a breakthrough in the fight against armed robbery in the region.
The suspects, Kwabena Amuah, 25, alias IK; Mohammed Nasir, 28, alias Mallam; Samuel Agyel, 24, alias Okese-1; and Kofi Gyasi, 26, alias Brefo, were apprehended on July 21 and 22, 2026, during coordinated raids at Duaso and Domeabra in the Western Central Region.
They are currently in Police custody assisting with investigations.
The incident was reported to Police on March 11, 2026, at approximately 11:00 p.m. The complainant, Mr. Orls Oduro, a gold-buying businessman based at Tamakloe, reported that after closing his shop for the day, he hired an Okada rider to take him to his residence at Wassa Akropong.
Midway through the journey, the two were ambushed by armed men who attacked them at gunpoint.
The robbers made off with GH¢24,000 in cash, seven pounds and six matches of gold valued at GH¢94,530,000, one iPhone XR, and one Techno Spark 12 mobile phone.
Following the report, Police launched a full-scale investigation. After months of intelligence gathering, operatives tracked down the suspects in two separate operations on July 21 and 22, 2026, at Duaso and Domeabra.
The four men were arrested without incident and have since been identified as key members of the robbery syndicate.
On July 23, 2026, all four suspects were arraigned before the Wassa Akropong District Court, where they were remanded into Police custody to assist with ongoing investigations.
The Police have named a fifth suspect, identified only as “Agogo,” as still at large. He is believed to be a member of the same syndicate and is currently being pursued by the Regional Command.
Authorities are appealing to the public for information that could lead to his arrest. Anyone with credible knowledge of Agogo’s whereabouts is urged to report to the nearest Police station.
In a press release signed by Assistant Superintendent of Police Beatrice Turkson, Head of the Public Affairs Unit for the Western Central Region, the Command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property.
“The Regional Police Command assures the public of its unwavering commitment to protecting lives and property, maintaining peace and security, and bringing all perpetrators of crime to justice,” the statement read.
With the four suspects in custody and remanded, Police are continuing their investigations to recover the stolen gold and cash, and to apprehend the fugitive Agogo.
Authorities have not ruled out further arrests as they work to dismantle the entire robbery network.
