A suspected armed robber is dead after a mobile money vendor fought back during an attack at Lashibi.
What started as a routine drive home for a mobile money vendor turned into a deadly confrontation in Lashibi on Friday, when he turned the tables on two armed robbers, killing one and recovering GH₵140,000 in stolen cash.
Police reports indicate that the vendor was attacked by two men on a motorbike as he travelled home from work. The suspects opened fire, shredding the vehicle’s rear tyre and shattering the front windscreen.
They snatched the bag containing the cash and attempted to speed off, but the vendor fought back.
In a dramatic turn, the vendor fired at the fleeing robbers, fatally wounding one. The second suspect abandoned the loot and vanished.
When police arrived at the scene, they discovered the deceased suspect was heavily armed. An AK-47 rifle, 66 rounds of ammunition, and cash amounting to GH₵3,000 were found on him. An ID card identified him as 46-year-old Innocent Elemuwa Akachukeu.
The Accra Regional Police Command has launched a manhunt for the second suspect and is urging residents with information to step forward.
The vendor, who escaped unharmed, has been assisting with investigations.
The Accra Regional Police Command is searching for the fleeing accomplice and is appealing to the public for help. Anyone with information should call 18555 or 191.
