The Nii Korle Kulo Family of Asere Dzorshie and the Nii Ayikwei Sewuhu Family of Ahumka Atukpai have officially announced the death of former Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr. Paul Tawiah Quaye.
The retired police chief passed away on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, at the 37 Military Hospital in Accra following a period of illness. He was 73.
Mr. Quaye served as Ghana’s IGP from 2009 to 2013, a tenure marked by significant structural reforms and an emphasis on discipline within the ranks.
Appointed by the late President Professor John Evans Atta Mills, he continued to lead the Ghana Police Service under President John Dramani Mahama until his retirement.
In a statement signed by the Head of Families, Mr. James Nii Korle Osabu Quaye, the bereaved families described the late IGP as a patriot whose leadership left an “indelible mark” on national security.
“His unyielding honor, integrity, and lifelong commitment to service and humanity remain a cherished legacy,” the statement read.
Widely regarded as a stern disciplinarian, Mr. Quaye is credited with modernizing the police service’s internal security architecture during a critical period of political transition in the Fourth Republic. Even after his retirement, he remained a respected consultant and figurehead in national security circles.
The family has indicated that funeral rites and burial ceremonies are currently being finalized. Specific dates and a schedule of events will be communicated to the public in due course.
While expressing their grief, the families have requested the public’s prayers and support, while asking for privacy as they navigate this difficult period of bereavement.
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno, together with members of the Police Management Board (POMAB), paid a visit to the family of the late former IGP, Mr. Paul Tawiah Quaye, at his residence to commiserate with them.
