A Ghanaian professor at Southern Illinois University Carbondale was fatally shot Saturday evening, and authorities have arrested his wife in connection with his death.
Deputies from the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office responded to a shooting report at about 5 p.m. near Lake Road, between Murphysboro and Carbondale.
The victim, 48-year-old Kofi Akamani, was taken to Memorial Hospital of Carbondale, where he was pronounced dead.
Akamani taught in the university’s Department of Forestry, offering courses in forest recreation and conservation social science, according to SIU’s website.
Investigators later arrested his wife, 35-year-old Betty Akamani.
She faces multiple charges related to the shooting, the sheriff’s office said.
