The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection (MOGCSP) has expressed profound sorrow over the recent boat accident on the Volta Lake, which claimed multiple lives, including those of women and children.
In a statement issued on April 10, 2026, the sector Minister, Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families.
“The Ministry extends its deepest sympathies and sincere condolences to all families who have lost loved ones in this devastating tragedy,” the statement read.
The Ministry further announced that immediate interventions are underway to support affected families. To this end, Minister Lartey has directed the Department of Social Welfare to collaborate closely with district authorities to promptly reach out to the victims’ families.
According to the statement, support efforts will prioritize psychosocial services and the assessment of urgent needs to help alleviate the burden on those impacted by the disaster.
Reaffirming its commitment to preventive action, the Ministry also stressed the critical need for stricter adherence to safety protocols in water transportation to avert future occurrences.
“MOGCSP reiterates the importance of safety measures in water transport and calls for strengthened compliance with all relevant safety protocols,” the statement added.
The Ministry assured the public of its continued dedication to protecting vulnerable groups, particularly during crises. It further pledged solidarity with all affected persons, emphasizing that support systems will be reinforced to ensure no one is left behind.
The Volta Lake incident has reignited public concern over safety standards in water transport across the country.
