A brazen daylight shooting in the Gbeniyiri township has cast a shadow over recent peace initiatives in the Savannah region.
An unknown attacker shot three individuals at close range on Thursday, March 5, resulting in two fatalities and leaving a third victim in critical condition at the Sawla-Tuna-Kalva District Hospital.
The Savannah Regional Police Command confirmed on Friday.
This violence comes at a particularly sensitive time, arriving just one week after a Presidential Mediation Committee, chaired by Mr. Emmanuel Bombande, submitted its findings to President Mahama in hopes of providing a lasting solution to the local conflict.
Furthermore, the shooting undermines recent traditional efforts to restore calm, as landowners had only just performed a spiritual purification ceremony.
In response, the Savannah Regional Security Council (REGSEC), under the leadership of Saulisu Be-Awuribe, is set to visit the community today to investigate the trigger for this latest attack.
