Traders in the Northern Region are counting their losses after a fire razed the Zabzugu market in the early hours of Monday, February 23.
The inferno destroyed vast stocks of yams and other goods, leaving the community devastated.
Efforts to stop the fire were crippled by the absence of a fire station in the district.

With the Ghana National Fire Service unable to respond in time, residents formed human chains and used buckets in a desperate, but largely unsuccessful, attempt to control the blaze.

In the midst of the chaos, traders could be seen rushing into the burning market to salvage their wares.

While initial reports suggest a windstorm may have ignited the flames, an official investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the disaster.
