9 Dead, 27 Critically Injured in Kintampo-Tamale Highway Crash

A passenger bus and a cargo truck carrying tomatoes collided head-on in the early hours of April 3 on the Kintampo-Tamale highway, killing nine people and critically injuring 27 others, police have confirmed.

The accident happened at approximately 3:00 am.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the bus (registration GS-2564-20), en route from an unknown origin to Widaana in the Pusiga District, was attempting to overtake two vehicles when it swerved into the opposite lane.

It then struck an oncoming truck (registration GR-4958-K) loaded with tomatoes heading to Kumasi Suronuase in the Kintampo North municipality.

Eight passengers died instantly at the scene.

A ninth victim was pronounced dead shortly after arrival at the Kintampo Municipal Hospital, where the 27 critically injured are now receiving emergency treatment.

The impact left both vehicles unrecognizable, with debris and tomato crates strewn across the highway. Eyewitnesses described a chaotic scene as first responders rushed survivors to the hospital.

The Kintampo-Tamale highway has a long history of fatal accidents, with local drivers frequently citing potholes, poor lighting, and reckless driving as contributing factors.

Thursday’s crash has renewed calls for urgent road repairs and stricter enforcement of traffic regulations.

Authorities have not yet released the identities of the deceased. An official investigation is underway.
