A tragic incident of mob violence has claimed the life of a 34-year-old man in the Sabon Zongo community of Kumasi, with three suspects now in police custody following their arraignment before the Asokore Mampong District Court.
The deceased, identified by the Ashanti Regional Police Command as Yusuf Zakari, was allegedly set upon by a group of individuals in the early hours of Saturday, 19 July, at a cattle kraal within the suburb. The attack left the victim with severe injuries, prompting an urgent medical response.
According to police accounts, Zakari was first transported to the Manhyia Government Hospital for emergency care. Due to the extent of his injuries, he was subsequently referred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, where medical staff pronounced him dead on arrival, a development that has deepened grief and outrage within the local community.
Swift police action led to the arrest of three individuals linked to the attack. They have been named as Moses Adoko, 37, a plumber; Abubakari Adams, 25, a herdsman; and Nurudeen Suleman, 35, a motor mechanic. All three appeared before Her Worship Mrs Hilder Esther Wryter at the Asokore Mampong District Court, which ordered their remand into police custody until their next hearing on 7 August.
While the arrests represent progress in the investigation, police have made it clear that the pursuit of justice is far from complete. Detectives are actively working to piece together the full sequence of events that led to the fatal assault and are intensifying efforts to track down any additional perpetrators who may have fled the scene.
“The Police have commenced further investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident and are making efforts to identify and arrest any other persons who may have been involved,” the Command stated.
In a strongly worded appeal, the Ashanti Regional Police Command has warned against the growing tendency toward mob justice, urging citizens to resist the impulse to take the law into their own hands.
The Command emphasized that all allegations of criminality should be channeled through established legal frameworks, with suspected offenders reported to the police for due process.
The police have also called on members of the public to volunteer any relevant information that could aid the investigation, directing them to the nearest police station or emergency contact lines. Authorities have assured the public of their unwavering commitment to ensuring that all individuals implicated in the incident face the full rigour of the law.
“The Police remain committed to ensuring that all persons connected with this incident are brought to justice through the due process of law,” the statement affirmed.
