Police Arrest Suspect in Murder of UCC Student

Police have arrested a 39-year-old man, Michael Mensah, in connection with the death of University of Cape Coast (UCC) student Innocentia Atsufui Avinu.

The suspect was taken into custody on Monday, June 15, 2026, by the Inspector General of Police’s Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team at the Pedu Lorry Station in Cape Coast.

Authorities confirmed that the arrest was the result of a sustained intelligence-led operation.

According to preliminary police investigations, Mensah, who claims to be a teacher by profession but also works as a driver, is believed to have picked up the 20-year-old student from Ayensu Plaza within the UCC hostel enclave on the evening of June 11, 2026.

He allegedly transported her to Hutchland Beach, the location where she was last seen alive.

The investigation is ongoing, and police have stated that further developments will be communicated to the public.
