Ofori-Atta returns home after US judicial order secures ICE release

Former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta has been released from a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility following a court ruling, marking the latest development in a cross-border legal saga that has drawn attention from both U.S. and Ghanaian authorities.

In a statement issued late on April 7, 2026, his legal representatives, Minkah-Premo, Osei-Bonsu, Bruce-Cathline & Partners, confirmed the release.

“Ken Ofori-Atta was released from ICE detention pursuant to a judicial order. He is now home with his family,” the firm said.

The legal team stressed that Mr. Ofori-Atta intends to fully exhaust due process mechanisms to defend his rights under the U.S. Constitution.

His family also expressed heartfelt gratitude for the public support received during what they described as a challenging period.

Mr. Ofori-Atta, a central figure in Ghana’s economic management from 2017 to early 2024 under the Akufo-Addo administration, remains under scrutiny by Ghana’s Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).

The OSP, headed by Kissi Agyebeng, had in June 2025 initiated steps for an INTERPOL Red Notice after Mr. Ofori-Atta repeatedly failed to respond to invitations for questioning.

That Red Notice, which would have compelled INTERPOL member countries to assist in his arrest and extradition, has since been withdrawn.

Sources indicate his details are no longer active in INTERPOL’s global database, though the underlying investigations in Ghana are believed to be ongoing.

No further details have been provided regarding the specific nature of the U.S. judicial order that secured his release from ICE custody.
