My Own Party Sabotaged Me: Henry Quartey Opens Up on NPP Rift Over ‘Rising Influence’

Former Greater Accra Regional Minister and Interior Minister, Henry Quartey, has disclosed that his ambitious agenda for the region was deliberately stifled by members of his own party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who perceived his growing popularity as a threat.

Mr. Quartey, known for his high-profile “Operation Recover All Loot” (ORAL) campaign and other developmental initiatives, broke his silence in a candid interview, shedding light on the internal power struggles that plagued his tenure.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem program, Quartey did not mince words when describing the resistance he faced from within the party hierarchy.

“I can state without any equivocation that my own party felt I was becoming too powerful and subsequently started pulling the plugs on my programs,” he stated.

He suggested that this internal sabotage was short-sighted, adding, “They probably regret it now, because those very initiatives had the potential to galvanize crucial floating voters for the party.”

The former minister, who was reassigned from the Greater Accra role to the Interior ministry in a cabinet reshuffle, implied that his frequent media engagements and the visible impact of his policies positioned him as a formidable figure, which unsettled some within the party leadership.

Beyond the political infighting, Mr. Quartey used the opportunity to underscore his personal integrity in public office.

He vehemently denied any allegations of self-enrichment, specifically stating that he never acquired any government land for personal use throughout his time in office.

He pivoted to express his broader concerns about the current state of indiscipline within Ghana’s public administration.

Quartey’s frank assessment provides a rare and unvarnished look into the intra-party dynamics of the NPP and offers a compelling explanation for the challenges and eventual shifts in his portfolio, painting a picture of a minister whose local success may have led to his political containment.
