“Hunger Would Have Killed Me”: Timini Egbuson Rethinks His Stance on YouTube Movies

Nollywood actor, Timini Egbuson

Nollywood actor Timini Egbuson has candidly reflected on his changing perception of YouTube movies, admitting that his previous disdain for the platform nearly cost him his livelihood.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday night, the actor wrote, “Can’t believe I was looking down on YouTube movies at some point. Hunger go don kpai me by now.”

His lighthearted remark underscores a significant shift in Nigeria’s entertainment landscape, where YouTube movies are rapidly gaining commercial traction.

Actors and filmmakers are increasingly leveraging the platform to reach wider audiences and generate direct revenue.

Egbuson, who has since starred in several YouTube productions, has fully embraced the market, expanding his portfolio beyond traditional Nollywood cinema and streaming services.

Historically, many Nollywood actors prioritised cinema releases, viewing them as more prestigious and financially rewarding.

This led to a lingering stigma against online films, despite their growing viewership and earning potential.

However, the tide is turning. As global streaming companies pull back on acquiring Nigerian content, local filmmakers are turning to YouTube as a viable alternative.

The platform offers fewer barriers to distribution and direct access to audiences, proving that the “YouTube movie” is no longer a stepping stone, it is a lucrative destination.
