Early Morning Fire at Kumasi New Kejetia Market Contained; No Casualties

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has contained an early morning fire at the Kumasi New Kejetia Market, saving over 30 shops and recording no casualties.

The incident occurred at shop F2230 on the first floor of the market. A team of nine firefighters, led by STNO I Maxwell Partey, arrived within two minutes of the distress call to find thick smoke billowing from the shop.

Using portable fire extinguishers and the market’s installed hose reel, the team brought the fire under control at 8:48 a.m. and fully extinguished it by 9:00 a.m.

The affected shop sustained partial smoke damage. Items lost include about 250 boxes of matches, nail polishing chemicals, and 10 deodorants.

Firefighters salvaged remaining goods and prevented the blaze from spreading to over 30 adjoining shops, saving goods worth millions of cedis.

Preliminary investigations suggest the fire resulted from the spontaneous ignition of stockpiled flammable substances mixed with combustible materials under poor ventilation. No injuries or fatalities were reported.
