A 36-year-old woman is in police custody after allegedly attempting to traffic a nine-year-old girl from Agormanya Zongo in the Lower Manya Krobo Municipality to Kenya.
The suspect was arrested by the Eastern Regional Police Command following a swift investigation that led to the child’s rescue at the Accra International Airport.
The victim had been reported missing by her father on Sunday, April 19, after she left home and did not return.
Acting on a complaint, the Odumase-Krobo District Police collaborated with BNI personnel at the airport, where they intercepted the suspect before she could board a flight to Kenya with the child.
Preliminary findings indicate the suspect intended to traffic the girl out of the country.
The suspect has since appeared before the Odumase Krobo Circuit Court, where she pleaded not guilty. She was remanded into police custody and is set to return to court on May 5 for a case management conference.
The young victim has been safely reunited with her father.
In the wake of the incident, Eastern Regional Police Public Relations Officer, Chief Inspector Bridget Opoku, is urging residents to stay vigilant and promptly report any suspicious behavior to law enforcement
