AMA to Roll Out 3,000 Bins to Tackle Littering in Accra

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has launched an initiative to install 3,000 public litter bins at strategic locations across the city to combat indiscriminate waste disposal in the capital.

The AMA’s Chief Executive, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, announced that the rollout has already commenced, with bins being placed at designated vantage points.

However, Mr. Allotey emphasised that the success of the project hinges on public cooperation and private sector support. He has called on corporate institutions to partner with local manufacturer Duraplast Ghana Limited to ramp up production and expand the coverage of the initiative.

Target areas for the new bins include high-traffic zones such as the vicinity of Jubilee House, the 37 Military Hospital, and the Kotoka International Airport.

“The visibility and accessibility of these bins will encourage citizens to dispose of trash responsibly,” Mr. Allotey stated, expressing optimism that the move would significantly reduce littering in the metropolis.

In a firm warning to the public, the AMA boss stressed that the receptacles are strictly for street litter, not household waste. To ensure compliance, the Assembly has deployed a team of youth monitors to oversee the bins.

“Anyone caught misusing these facilities or dumping domestic waste will face the full rigours of the law,” he cautioned.
