Weija-Gbawe MP and Second Deputy Minority Whip, Hon. Jerry Ahmed Shaib, has called on the government and sporting authorities to implement a structured support system for athletes who sustain career-ending injuries while representing Ghana.Speaking in Parliament, Hon. Shaib cited the plight of former national U-17 goalkeeper Ali Jarrah, who has endured decades of hardship after suffering a debilitating injury during a match in 1993.
Despite his contributions to Ghanaian football, Jarrah now relies on a meager chalk-making business for survival.
It is imperative that the government establishes a comprehensive support system for athletes whose careers are cut short due to injuries sustained in national service, Hon. Shaib stated.
“This system should encompass medical care, financial aid, entrepreneurial training, and formal recognition programs to honor their sacrifices.”
Describing Jarra’s situation as a national disgrace, the MP emphasized that such a framework would ensure no athlete is abandoned after dedicating their health and future to the nation. He urged swift action to safeguard the welfare of Ghana’s sporting heroes.
