ACCRA, Ghana – The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has provided a detailed update on the casualties from a tragic stampede that occurred during a recruitment exercise at the El-Wak Sports Stadium on Wednesday.
The incident took place around 6:20 am when a large crowd of applicants reportedly breached security barriers and forced their way into the stadium before the scheduled screening was set to begin.According to the GAF, the stampede resulted in significant casualties
- 28 applicants were transported to the 37 Military Hospital for emergency treatment.
- 6 applicants were tragically confirmed dead.
- 5 applicants are currently receiving care in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
- 12 applicants remain hospitalized in critical condition.
Preliminary reports indicate that the majority of the deceased are women, though official identities have not yet been released. President John Mahama visited the 37 Military Hospital to be briefed on the situation and assess the condition of the injured. He was accompanied by a delegation including.The Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah,The acting Defence Minister, Cassiel Ato Forson and Other senior government officials.
The GAF has extended its deepest condolences to the families of the deceased and wishes a full and speedy recovery to those injured. The military high command has also assured the public that it is taking all necessary measures to investigate the incident and prevent a recurrence in the future.
