Speaker of Parliament Swears in New Members for Akwatia and Tamale Central

Speaker of Parliament swears in new MPs for Akwatia and Tamale Central

The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has officially inaugurated the newly elected Members of Parliament for the Akwatia and Tamale Central constituencies on Tuesday.

The newly sworn-in legislators, Bernard Bediako Baidoo and Professor Alidu Seidu, both of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), bring the total composition of the House to 276 members.

The two members took the Oath of Allegiance and the Oath of a Member of Parliament; Professor Alidu Seidu was sworn in using the Quran, while Bernard Bediako Baidoo took his oath on the Bible.

Following the formalities, Speaker Bagbin addressed the House, reminding the new MPs of their solemn duty to serve their constituents and the nation with integrity.

“I will hold you to the two oaths you have sworn, particularly the one where you pledged to faithfully and conscientiously discharge the duties of a Member of Parliament,” the Speaker stated.

Emphasizing the importance of parliamentary procedure, Speaker Bagbin advised the new members to master the core documents that govern their work.

He metaphorically referred to the Constitution and the Standing Orders as the “essential tools” for their new role.

“If you want to discharge your duties well, you must study these documents thoroughly, regardless of your professional background,” he counseled.

Bernard Bediako Baidoo secured his seat in the Akwatia constituency with 18,199 votes in a by-election prompted by the passing of the late MP, Ernest Yaw Kumi.

In Tamale Central, Professor Alidu Seidu was elected unopposed as the sole candidate in a by-election necessitated by the tragic death of the incumbent MP, Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, in a helicopter crash on August 6, 2025.
