Police Seize 2,600 Rounds of Ammunition at Checkpoint

The Ashanti South Regional Police Command has made a significant security breakthrough, intercepting a major cache of 2,600 rounds of AK-47 ammunition at the Asankare police checkpoint.

The seizure occurred during a routine stop of a commercial bus, with registration number GT 5771-18, which was traveling toward the northern part of the country. A subsequent thorough search of the vehicle revealed the large ammunition haul, along with two bulletproof vests and protective helmets.

Deputy Regional Police Commander, ACP Cephas Arthur, who confirmed the incident, stated the interception is a critical success of intensified police operations aimed at curbing crime and ensuring public safety, especially during the festive season.

“The retrieval of these dangerous items underscores our relentless commitment to preventing crime and protecting citizens,” ACP Arthur said. “This operation has undoubtedly averted a potential threat to public order.”

With December 31, 2025, celebrations approaching, ACP Arthur assured residents that the Police Command has deployed robust security arrangements across the region to safeguard lives and property.

He also urged the public to partner with the police by adopting personal safety measures. “We encourage everyone to remain vigilant, secure their homes, and report any suspicious activities to the authorities immediately. Community cooperation is vital in reducing the risks of robbery and other criminal acts,” he appealed.

Authorities have launched a full-scale investigation to unravel the source and intended destination of the ammunition, as well as to apprehend all individuals involved in the illicit transport.

This major interception highlights ongoing concerns about the proliferation of weapons and the police’s heightened alertness during the holiday period.
