Parliament approves 2026 budget allocations amid chaos in the house

The Parliament of Ghana has approved the 2026 budget allocations amid a tumultuous sitting, marked by protests from the Minority over the Speaker’s decision to declare the Kpandai parliamentary seat vacant.

Chaotic scenes erupted on Tuesday, December 9, 2025 as Minority members abandoned their seats and gathered in the centre of the chamber, chanting and protesting, which briefly led to a scuffle.

The commotion forced parliamentary marshals to intervene while MPs shouted over each other, halting proceedings temporarily.

Despite the disruption, the Majority succeeded in adopting the budget report, a crucial step in finalising the 2026 fiscal policy.

The Minority, however, has vowed to continue obstructing government business until the Kpandai issue is resolved.

They argue that the Speaker acted prematurely by notifying the Electoral Commission while related cases are still before the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court.

Following the heated approval, the Speaker adjourned the House, ending a session filled with protests, accusations, and sharp exchanges.

After the sitting, First Deputy Minority Whip Habib Iddrisu told the media that the manner in which the reports were approved was “shameful,” insisting that, from the Minority’s perspective, no government business had been conducted.

The MP for Tolon added that when the House resumes today, Wednesday, December 10, the Minority will “advise themselves” on the way forward.
