OSP Denies ‘Trap’ Claim, Provides Arrest Details of Lawyer Martin Kpebu

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has defended its arrest of private lawyer Martin Kpebu, providing a detailed timeline of Wednesday’s events and firmly rejecting suggestions it fell into a deliberate “trap.”

In a social media statement on Thursday morning, the OSP Director-SRC, Sammy Darko asserted the arrest was a lawful response to obstruction.

According to him, Mr. Kpebu, upon arriving at the OSP premises, ignored security protocols, reacted angrily when reminded, and insulted the guards, allegedly calling them “nobodies” and threatening their superiors.
“The arrest was executed without force,” the OSP emphasised.

Following his arrest, Mr. Kpebu was granted bail, though the OSP accused one of his lawyers of creating a further disturbance by insulting officers.

Dismissing widespread speculation, the OSP stated, “The Office has not fallen for any trap. It acted strictly within legal and procedural bounds.”

Mr. Kpebu is due to report for questioning on the obstruction allegation today, Thursday at 11 am while a separate date will be set for his corruption complaint.

The private legal practitioner, Martin Kpebu on Wednesday, December 3, described his arrest by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) as entirely unjustified, insisting it was a “suicide mission” being pursued by Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng.

“This whole episode is a suicide mission that Kissi Agyebeng’s OSP has embarked on. He may claim he has nothing to do with it, but he is the head of the institution,” Mr Kpebu told the press.

Mr. Kpebu reported to the OSP on Wednesday to assist with investigations into corruption allegations he has levelled against the Special Prosecutor, but, was detained following a confrontation with security personnel at the entrance to the OSP headquarters.

Speaking in an interview with TV3 after his release, Mr Kpenu recall the arrest occurred even before investigators had an opportunity to question him.

According to him, the decision of the detaintion him baffled, thereby, accusing the OSP, under Mr Agyebeng’s leadership, of adopting a reckless and confrontational approach that risks damaging the credibility of the institution.
