No Ghana Card, No Motor Insurance – NIC Announces

by Creative Network

Starting January 1, 2026, all motorists in Ghana must present their Ghana Card to buy or renew any motor insurance policy. The National Insurance Commission (NIC) has mandated this new requirement to strengthen regulation and curb fraud in the insurance sector.

Corporate clients will additionally need to provide their Tax Identification Number (TIN) for these transactions.

According to Acting Commissioner of Insurance, Dr. Abiba Zakariah, this move aims to enhance transparency, improve claims management, and align Ghana’s insurance industry with international standards for customer verification and anti-money laundering.

The NIC advises all vehicle owners to ensure they have their Ghana Card ready when visiting insurance providers from the effective date.
