In Wake of El-Wak Tragedy, State Offers Recruitment to Families of Deceased Applicants

In response to the tragic stampede at El‑Wak Stadium during a recent Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) recruitment exercise, the government has announced a series of measures to support the affected families. Officials have confirmed that the families of the six deceased applicants will be offered an opportunity to nominate a qualified relative for enlistment into the GAF.

The incident occurred last Wednesday when a large crowd of applicants surged into the stadium ahead of the scheduled time, breaching security protocols and resulting in a stampede that claimed six lives and left numerous others injured.

During a visit to a bereaved family in Eyan Maim, Central Region, Deputy Defence Minister Ernest Brogya Genfi conveyed that President John Dramani Mahama has authorized an automatic recruitment slot for each affected family.

“The President has directed us to inform you that the State will stand with the families in making funeral arrangements,” Mr. Genfi stated. “Furthermore, for all those who lost their lives in the process of seeking to serve in the military, their families are to present a qualified replacement to be absorbed into the armed forces. The relevant government authorities in the region will engage with you on this matter.”

Accompanying the Deputy Minister, the Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, described the event as a national tragedy. She affirmed the government’s commitment to providing the six victims with befitting burials in recognition of their aspiration to serve the nation.

“The government and the entire nation mourn with you,” she said. “The President has assured that the State will cover all costs for the burials and is also bearing the full medical expenses for the injured receiving treatment at the 37 Military Hospital until their full recovery.” These gestures are part of the government’s effort to honor the memories of the deceased and to provide tangible support to the grieving families.
