IGP Clears Backlog, Over 12,800 Officers Promoted

Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno has approved the promotion of 12,802 police officers between January and the first week of February 2026, bringing an end to a decade-long promotion backlog within the Ghana Police Service.

The promotions affect ranks from Lance Corporal to Chief Inspector and were confirmed by the IGP’s Secretariat. The exercise included both administrative upgrades and special promotions carried out in line with the Police Service Regulations, 2012 (C.I. 76).

The announcement comes amid allegations of nepotism, which the Secretariat has strongly refuted, affirming that all promotions followed due process.

“All unit, district, divisional, and regional commanders across the country’s 25 police regions were directed to submit the names of officers due for promotion,” the Secretariat explained.

Out of the total number promoted, approximately 11,900 junior-ranking officers moved up one rank after serving more than the mandatory four-year period. Another 600 officers received promotions based on special recommendations.

The Secretariat also noted that several petitions from officers regarding delayed or unfair promotions were addressed.

These included cases involving personnel who had been on interdiction for over five years and were later acquitted. Following reviews, the affected officers were promoted.

Additionally, following petitions from the families of officers who died in active service, posthumous promotions were granted to the fallen personnel.
