In a move to strengthen indigenous languages and improve educational results, Education Minister, Haruna Iddrisu has ordered the mandatory use of mother-tongue instruction across Ghanaian schools.
“I have directed the Director-General of the GES to make the use of mother-tongue instruction mandatory in all Ghanaian schools,” he said.
He explained that the directive, issued to the GES Director-General, is a key part of President Mahama’s broader education reforms.
The initiative is specifically designed to boost understanding and learning among younger students by having teachers use local languages as the primary medium of instruction.
Speaking at the launch of the Free Tertiary Education Programme for Persons with Disabilities at UPSA, the Minister highlighted the core benefits of the policy: significantly enhancing student comprehension, boosting literacy levels, and preserving Ghana’s rich cultural identity through the use of local languages in teaching.
