Court Orders Separation of Twin Brothers Sentenced for Motorbike Theft

by Creative Network

The Bibiani District Court has sentenced identical twin brothers to 48 months in prison each for stealing an unregistered motorbike worth GH¢13,000.

The convicts, Seth Frimpong (alias Atta Payin), a welder, and Emmanuel Frimpong (alias Atta Kakra), an excavator operator, stole the motorbike on June 16, 2025, in Adiembra near Chirano in the Western North Region.

Charged with conspiracy to commit a crime and stealing, they pleaded guilty but appealed for leniency, citing a partial refund of GH¢3,440 to the victim and their lack of familial support.

Presiding Judge Lord Delvin Essandoh handed down enhanced sentences of 48 months for each charge, to be served concurrently. In a notable decision, he also ordered that the twins serve their sentences in separate prisons—Seth at Obuasi Prison and Emmanuel at Kumasi Central Prison—ensuring they would not have each other’s companionship during their rehabilitation.

The judge referenced the legendary twins Romulus and Remus, founders of Rome, whose story was tainted by fratricide. He remarked, “Before this court are identical twins who have chosen to be known for their criminal acts. While they entered this world together, it does not mean they must share the same fate in crime.”

The court further directed that the recovered motorbike be returned to the complainant, Daniel Fosu.

How the Crime Unfolded

According to Chief Inspector B.O. Agyemang, the prosecution’s case revealed that Fosu had parked his unregistered Haojin motorbike at home on the night of June 15, 2025, only to discover it missing around 4:00 a.m. the next day.

A witness, Samuel Akurugu Manzan, was spotted leaving the area on a tricycle and was detained by locals. He later informed the police that the twins had hired him under false pretenses—claiming they were visiting relatives—but instead used the opportunity to steal the motorbike.

Investigations led authorities to a mechanic in Bibiabi, where the bike was recovered on June 30, 2025, after verifying its chassis number.

The twins were arrested on July 4, 2025, at the Kwamekrom Police Checkpoint while traveling on a Kumasi–Diaso-bound vehicle. During questioning, they admitted to the theft, with Emmanuel confessing that he had ridden the bike to Bibiani and handed it over to a man named “Chairman” in Lineso to sell. The motorbike was sold for GH¢4,000, with the proceeds going to the accused.

Police records also showed that the twins were repeat offenders, having previously served sentences of 24 months and 3 months, including an incident where they escaped from police custody.
